Osama bin Laden, the founder and leader of terrorist group al-Qaeda, was killed on May 2, 2011, by U.S. Navy SEALs in a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. The operation, code-named "Operation Neptune Spear," was conducted under the direction of then-President Barack Obama. The death of bin Laden was a significant milestone in the fight against terrorism, as he had been responsible for numerous deadly attacks including the September 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. His death was widely celebrated in the United States and other countries, although it also sparked some controversy regarding the legality and morality of targeted killings.
